Kitten Costs
How Much Does a Ragdoll Kitten Cost? (2026 Breeder Breakdown)
Ragdoll kittens from responsible breeders typically cost between $1,800 and $2,500 in 2026. If you've seen listings for $500 or $800, there's a reason for that - and it's not a deal.
What is the typical price range for a Ragdoll kitten from a reputable breeder?
From a TICA-registered, health-testing breeder in 2026, expect to pay $1,800 to $2,500 for a pet-quality Ragdoll kitten. Show-quality or breeding-rights kittens run higher. Price variation within that range reflects geography, the quality of the breeding program, and what is included in the purchase.
Here is the context that matters: Ragdolls are a breed with known cardiac health risks. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is the leading cause of premature death in the breed. A responsible breeder is paying for annual cardiac screenings, genetic DNA panels, and TICA registration to maintain documented bloodlines. That infrastructure has a real cost, and it shows up in the price.
What does the price actually cover at a reputable cattery?
When you buy from a responsible breeder, the price should include:
- A veterinary health certificate issued before the kitten leaves
- Age-appropriate vaccinations and deworming
- TICA registration paperwork transferable to the new owner
- Documentation that both parents have been HCM screened and DNA-tested for PKD
- A kitten care packet with feeding instructions and transition guidance
- Ongoing breeder support after pickup
The better catteries will also send a sample bag of the food the kitten has been eating. A smooth dietary transition in the first week at home matters more than most new owners expect.
Why do well-bred Ragdoll kittens cost what they do?
The price reflects what it actually costs to breed responsibly. Some real line items:
- HCM echocardiograms: $200–400 per cat, annually. This is a non-negotiable in a responsible Ragdoll program.
- DNA panels: PKD, blood type, and any additional genetic testing
- TICA registration and stud fees for maintaining documented, registered bloodlines
- Vet fees per kitten: first vaccines, deworming, health certificate - $150–300 per kitten before they leave
- High-quality food for nursing queens and developing kittens
- Time: daily handling and socialization from week three through week twelve or fourteen, when kittens go home
The math does not work at $800. A cattery selling at that price is cutting something - usually testing, sometimes socialization, occasionally both.
Why are Ragdoll kittens under $1,000 almost always a red flag?
Three possibilities, none of them good:
Backyard breeder. No health testing, no TICA registration, no documented pedigree. The kitten may look like a Ragdoll and may even have a decent temperament, but you have no visibility into the genetic health of the parents. HCM is a ticking clock in untested lines.
Kitten mill. Volume operation, minimal socialization, kittens spending their first weeks in enclosures rather than underfoot in a home. The behavioral and health consequences often show up in the first year.
Scam. This is increasingly common on Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, and Instagram. Professional-looking photos (often stolen from legitimate catteries), an emotional backstory, and a request for a wire transfer or gift card deposit. The kitten does not exist.
If a price seems too good to be true in this breed, treat it as a signal, not a discount.
Are there ongoing costs I should budget for after bringing a Ragdoll home?
Ragdolls are medium-to-large cats that live 12–17 years on average. Budget accordingly:
- Annual wellness vet visits: $200–400/year
- High-quality food: $600–900/year. Ragdolls eat more than most cats, and this breed rewards good nutrition.
- Litter, toys, and supplies: $200–300/year
- Pet insurance: $30–80/month. Worth serious consideration given HCM risk in the breed. Shop for a policy that covers hereditary and congenital conditions.
The kitten purchase price is a one-time cost. The ongoing investment is real, and worth planning for before you commit to the breed.
